When I’m craving Mexican food I often overlook El Cholo Mexican Restaurant near L.A. Live. For some reason, I think of El Cholo as a tourist restaurant and I avoid it. Well, that’s not the case for my husband. He loves El Cholo and convinced me to go there a few days ago.
El Cholo specializes in authentic and traditional Mexican dishes. Although the current DTLA location opened in 2010, the restaurant chain dates back to an original location on Broadway near the Coliseum. The restaurant is on Flower Street, just north of 11th Street. It looks like a little Mexican “casa.” There is a great front dining room, but the best seating is on the giant covered patio in the back of the restaurant.
My husband says that El Cholo serves the best enchiladas… almost as good as mother’s secret recipe. That is a huge compliment! He just loves their Sonora Style Enchilada ($13.75) made of layered corn tortillas, chicken and a tomato/onion/cilantro broth, topped with a fried egg. He loves it. I ordered one of the daily specials, the Shrimp and Chorizo Quesadilla. Not sure I loved it as much as my husband loves the enchilada, but it was really good. I cleaned my plate.
If you are looking for a place to eat before a game at Staples Center or a concert at Microsoft, think outside of L.A. Live and head over to El Cholo, but make reservations on game nights there is always a wait to be seated.
