Several years ago, when we moved to Downtown Los Angeles we celebrated at The Counter, a burger chain restaurant across from Macy’s on 7th Street. It was our first neighborhood restaurant as official DTLA residents. The Counter is easily overlooked because there are so many other great restaurants in town, but it recently got back on my radar after seeing some awesome photos of their burgers on the restaurant’s Instagram account. So last night we returned for dinner, and clearly I am not counting calories. I started by ordering the Loaded Tots ($10). It’s a bowl of tots covered with pimento cheese, topped with applewood smoked bacon and scallions, served with a side of buttermilk ranch dressing. If you are a fan of tots, you will love ’em.
Then I ordered The Counter Burger ($13). It’s a 1/3 lb. beef patty, topped with provolone cheese, tomatoes, lettuce blend, fried onion strings, sautéed mushrooms and a garlic aioli on a brioche bun. The Counter prides itself on serving all-natural, anti-biotic free Angus beef that is responsibly raised and handled. They offer up several signature burgers, but also let you create your own custom burger where you get your choice of bun, toppings and sauces. The combinations are endless.
My husband went a lot healthier and got the Hippie Salad ($10) made up of organic mixed greens, herbed goat cheese, alfalfa sprouts, roasted grape tomatoes, quinoa and garlic croutons. He added grilled chicken for an extra $4. For the record, he did eat a few of my tater tots.
There’s a full bar with a great list of craft beers too! The service is friendly and efficient. If you are looking to grab a reasonably priced meal, be sure to get The Counter on your restaurant radar.
