There are lots of taquerias in and around Downtown Los Angeles that serve Mexican food. Many of them dish up the same old things, but the menu at the new restaurant called Sonoratown is different. Sonoratown is a taqueria that specializes in Sonora-style food from northern Mexico.
My husband and I walked across town to the restaurant a few days ago. It’s located on 8th Street between Los Angeles and Santee Streets in the Fashion District. It’s a small little place, but you can’t miss the neon sign in the window and the orange stools out front. Once you get inside, there’s the counter where you place your order. The menu offers tacos and quesadillas, but also dishes called caramelo, lorenza and chivichanga. You have your choice of meats: grilled steak, chicken, tripita (tripe – gross) or chorizo. All their meats are grilled over mesquite charcoal.
I went for the quesadilla ($3.50) with chorizo. It’s made with Monterey jack cheese on homemade tortilla and served with green and red salsa. My husband ordered a grilled steak taco ($2) topped with chopped cabbage and avocado sauce. He also ordered the chivichanga ($3.50) with chicken. He wasn’t too sure what it was, but OMG was he happy he ordered it. It was a mini burrito made with a homemade tortilla and stuffed with shredded chicken breast, jack and mild cheddar cheeses, fire roasted tomatoes and Anaheim peppers. Although I did not share my quesadilla with him, I did try his chivichanga (well, I had to pry it from his hand) and it was delicious. When you visit Sonoratown, order the chivichanga… you will love it.
The food at Sonoratown is fresh and flavorable, and you can wash it all down with aqua fresa or Mexican sodas. In addition to great food, there is also great service. You feel very welcome and appreciated by the staff. If you have not been to Sonoratown yet, you need to plan a trip there ASAP, but right now, it’s only open for lunch (11am to 4pm) Tuesday through Saturday. Hopefully they will start staying open later so we can grab dinner on the way home from work.
