There’s a new pizza place in DTLA… and it’s really good. The Urban Oven started as a custom-built wood-fired food truck back in 2012… and now it has officially opened a brick and mortar restaurant inside The Bloc shopping complex on 7th Street. We were invited to a pre-grand opening tasting last week and got to sample some of the menu items. We started with the Arugula Salad ($8) with shaved parmigiana and a delicious lemon vinaigrette dressing. We loved everything about the salad.
Up next came the pizzas that are made in a real brick oven. They don’t sell pizza by the slice. You need to order the whole thing. They odder up 10″ and 13″ pizzas that range from $10 to $19. My husband went for “The Dragon” with pomodoro (tomato sauce), mozzarella, pepperoni, crimini and jalapeno peppers. At the recommendation of the server (the very cute server) I ordered the “Tre Verde.” This pizza has no red sauce. It’s kale, green onions, asparagus, red pepper flakes, parmigiana and olive oil. It was so good. We can’t wait to go back and try some of the other creations including the homemade meatballs and the porchetta sandwich.
They serve beer and wine, and if you are the designated driver you get your coffee or soft drink for free. Oh, get this… The Urban Oven is a cashless restaurant, so bring your credit or debit cards.
