CORNER BAKERY CAFE IN DTLA’S CALIFORNIA PLAZA SERVES UP GOOD FOOD, GREAT OUTDOOR SEATING, BUT SKIMPS ON THE AVOCADO

Corner Bakery Café is a national restaurant franchise with locations across the country. Two of those locations are in DTLA.  The newest has been open in the California Plaza on Grand Avenue for almost a year now, and I finally decided to give it a try for lunch.  What’s nice about this location is that it has a lot of outdoor seating.  California Plaza is a great place to enjoy your lunch, while enjoying the beautiful weather.

I ordered a Corner Combo.  It’s half an Uptown Turkey Sandwich and a cup of Big Al’s Chili ($9.69).  The Uptown Turkey sandwich is made up of smoked turkey, Applewood smoked bacon, avocado, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo served on harvest toast.  The price includes a dill pickle spear and a small bag of potato chips.  Okay, the sandwich was good, especially the bread!  However, I was extremely disappointed with the small amount of avocado on the sandwich.   Seriously, it was about the size of my thumb nail.

Unlike the skimpy amount of avocado, the Big Al’s chili definitely did not disappoint.  It is their secret recipe, topped with sharp cheddar cheese.  I ordered the cup, but you can also get the chili (or any of their soups) in a bread bowl.  I will definitely have to try that next time.

If it wasn’t for the avocado (or lack of it), I would have loved today’s lunch.  With that said, I will give the place another try.  I just hope they won’t be so cheap with the avocado! Oh, and next time I will order one of their awesome looking desserts.
