I’ve lived in DTLA for years, and for some reason I have never walked on the sidewalk in front of Nickel Diner on Main Street. I’ve walked past it while on the other side of the street, but never past the front door. For some reason, I have always avoided it. I really don’t know why. Well, the other night we finally checked out the Nickel Diner for dinner. OMG… this place is great.
This is a classic American diner smack in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles. The interior resembles the old fashioned diners you find in the South with an open kitchen and a lunch counter. The place has high ceilings with red leather booths along with vintage advertising on the walls. Seriously, this place is awesome… and so is the food.
The menu features classic comfort foods like Mama’s Spaghetti and Meatballs ($10.75), Catfish with Corn Cakes and Pecan Sauce ($13.75) served with hashed bacon Brussel sprouts, and the Nickel Burger ($9.75). The portions are huge, but of course, we had to order a side of the Old-Fashioned Stuffing ($4.25).
The best feature of the restaurant isn’t on the menu…. it’s on the dessert tray the server brings over to your table after your meal. They make homemade Ding-Dongs and Pop Tarts, plus S’mores Cake… but we decided to split a slice of the Peanut Butter Potato Chip Cake. Total decadence!
Okay, I think the reason I avoided Nickel Diner all these years is because that stretch of Main Street isn’t developed as other streets in the neighborhood. Well, big mistake on my part. Nickel Dinner is closed on Mondays, but serves breakfast and lunch until 3:30pm, then reopens for dinner at 6pm the rest of the week. If you haven’t headed over to Nickel Diner yet, learn from my mistakes and get over there soon.
