DTLAexplorer.com first told you about barcito (with a lower case b – not a typo) a year ago. It’s an Argentine inspired restaurant on the corner of 12th and Grand in DTLA’s South Park neighborhood. Well, there’s now one more reason to eat at barcito… it’s a gratuity-free restaurant. What’s that mean? Well, that means there is no longer be a tip line on the receipt and you are encouraged not to tip no matter how badly you want to.
In a letter posted on the restaurant’s website the owner says, “For years, the practice of tipping has left me with a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended). An experience that should be fueled by hospitality, by genuine connection, and by a desire to make people happy, has, historically, been slapped with a dollar sign. To add insult to injury, it’s unlawful to share those tips with anyone working in the kitchen. Which puts our hard working back of house staff at a tremendous disadvantage. As an alum of Danny Meyer’s restaurant group (based in NYC), I’ve decided to join his gratuity free movement, and eliminate the awkward, antiquated practice of tipping here at barcito.”
The restaurant says it compensates the entire staff with a competitive, living wage including health benefits, improved stability, and greater opportunities for advancement. Well, no tipping is an added bonus to the creative and delicious food the restaurant already serves like the squash blossoms ($11), the arancini corn risotto balls ($11), the pulpo grilled octopus served with a fried egg ($14) and the provoleta seared goat cheese ($12).
