CITY TAVERN HAS A HEARTY BRUNCH MENU PLUS BOTTOMLESS BLOODY MARYS

img_5937The other day we had guests in town and needed to find a nearby restaurant for brunch. After a quick discussion we decided to head over to the Fig at 7th complex and check out City Tavern.  Although we had been to City Tavern for drinks, we had never eaten there.

The place has a decent brunch menu, offering something for just about everyone, including bottomless Bloody Marys.  The “morning salad” cocktails are $9 each, or unlimited for $20… that means if you want to get your money’s worth on this “bottomless” offer, you need to down at least three.  No problem here!

Oh, I’m getting ahead of myself.  First, let me tell you about the space.  City Tavern is located on the lower level of the Fig at 7th complex.  It’s described as an “old school tavern” with distressed brick walls, reclaimed wood floors, wooded tables and chairs plus a lounge with comfy couches and a great outside patio area.  The place has a full bar with 28 craft draft beers, a nice wine selection and some interesting hand crafted cocktails.

Okay, now let’s talk about the food.  We ordered a little of everything beginning with the deviled eggs ($7.50) topped with chopped bacon, housemade hot sauce and chives, followed by the mac and cheese ($9) made with white cheddar and topped with bread crumbs.

Then the food parade continued with the taco truck club sandwich ($13) of marinated chicken breast, cheddar cheese, bacon, cabbage salad, roasted jalapeno with cilantro aioli. Next came the steak and eggs ($16) which was a petite New York strip, two eggs any, and chilaquiles.

Although they looked a little nasty, the hit of the table was the breakfast carne asada fries ($13).  It was french fries covered with marinated steak, cheddar cheese with red and green salsas, and then topped with two fried eggs and guacamole.

This was not a socialite brunch with poached eggs and crumpets.  It’s generous portions of hearty comfort food.  Was it the best brunch in DTLA?  No, but the service was friendly (Thanks Matthew) and the food was good.  If you are looking for a no-nonsense brunch, you should check out City Tavern.
