For months now I have been wanting to check out Plan Check Kitchen + Bar and finally we made it. The restaurant is located on Wilshire Boulevard just a block west of the 110 Freeway. They serve up “modern American comfort food in a small plate format along with unique cocktails, premium whiskeys and craft beers.” The Plan Check name comes from an architectural term, and that’s what inspires the restaurant’s industrial interior. When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly host who escorted us to booth seating in the bar area. Once seated, we were again greeted, this time by Johnny, our friendly server.
We decided to start with the Dynamite Crab Dip appetizer ($14) made up of crab, masago (roe egg), charred tomato and nori, served with a side of toast. Okay, I’m going to be very honest… don’t order this dish. It was very fishy and not crabby enough.
For our main course, I ordered the Short Rib Pot Roast ($18). It was a very generous chunk of meat on top of cauliflower puree, served with a bone marrow turnover pie. I loved the puree. There was too much meat, but I’m not complaining about that. I was not a fan of the bone marrow turnover.
My husband was quickly sold on the Chefs Favorite Burger ($15) with cheese two ways, bacon two ways topped with a fried egg and hot sauce. This burger also included something the restaurant calls Ketchup Leather. It’s described as an “innovative square of deliciousness… not only does it add great flavor, it also prevents the burger buns from getting soggy.” The burger and the ketchup leather were a hit. We added a side of the Fresh Cut Fries ($5) that are made with beef tallow and smoked salt… plus some regular ketchup (LOL). Again, another hit – delicious!
Okay… after all this food we still ordered dessert after Johnny the server described the Cruller Donuts ($6). This dessert is cooked to order. It’s two crullers stacked and then filled with a cream and garnished with sliced banana. BAM!
Plan Check is a meat lover’s restaurant. The portions are quite generous. We enjoyed most of the food. The staff could not be friendlier. The place is a short walk from DTLA. If you are looking for a new place for lunch or dinner, you need to head to Plan Check.
