Smorgasburg made it’s Los Angeles debut this past Sunday at the Alameda Produce Market in DTLA and despite the heat, thousands of people turned out to pig out! Every Sunday, the five-acre parking lot will be transformed into a food lover’s heaven with food vendors serving up everything from pepperoni pizza to porridge, lobster nachos to grilled cheese. The market is open from 10am to 6pm, so we arrived right at 10am to try and beat the crowds. There is a brand new parking structure, so there is plenty of parking. The parking entrance is at the intersection of Alameda and Bay. You get 2 hours of free parking, and there is no fee to get in the market itself.
We were not the only ones who wanted to get a jump on the crowd. At 10:05am the place was already getting crowded. As soon as we arrived, we made a quick lap to scope out all the food vendors, and there are plenty of them. Whatever you are craving, you can probably find it here. Surprisingly, at 10:30am several of the vendors were still prepping their food and not ready for customers. I’m sure this is something they will work out by next week. Once you decide what to eat there are plenty of picnic tables with umbrellas throughout the area. Finding a place to sit down to eat in the shade was never a problem. If you don’t have kids, be sure to check out the 21+ beer garden area. The area is less crowded and the tables have Connect 4 and Jenga games on them.
In addition to all the food choices, there is also a shopping market featuring a great selection of vintage clothing and furnishings. Honestly, we didn’t pay much attention to the shopping. It was hot and we were hungry. Once we scarfed down our food, we got out of heat.
The original Smorgasburg started in 2011 in Brooklyn. It gets up to 10,000 visitors per day, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Brooklyn. I am sure the new west coast counterpart will be as successful, if not more successful. Smorgasburg LA is part of the larger ROW DTLA development that is set to open later this year.
