DIRT DOG RESTAURANT IS A MUST FOR ALL STREET FOOD AND HOT DOG LOVERS

imageIf you are a fan of L.A. street food, but are not a fan of eating from food carts, you must check out Dirt Dog.  I have been drooling over Instagram photos of their hot dogs for months and finally made it down Figueroa to the strip mall at West Adams. (Okay, it’s not technically DTLA!  I know!  Please don’t email me.)  They start with 100% Premium All Beef Nathan’s Hot Dogs… and from there you have lots of choices.  I went for the House Dog ($5.95).  It’s a hot dog wrapped in center cut bacon, topped with grilled onions and bell peppers that are cooked in a house made Thousand Island bacon sauce.  I splurged and spent an extra 50 cents on the fresh baked lobster bun (money well spent) with a green chile spread.  It is all then topped with ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and bacon bits.  Is your mouth watering yet?

imageMy husband went for the Red ($5.95).  It too was covered in onions and bell peppers, but these were cooked in house made spicy tomato chile sauce.  The bun has a chipotle aioli spread and it was topped with red pepper flakes and bacon bits.

There is also the Green Dog with a chimichurri sauce, a Brown Dog with a teriyaki sauce and a Veggie Dog.  The Veggie Dog can be ordered Red, Green or Brown style. They cook the veggie dogs separately from anything that touches meat. One of the owners is vegan so he makes sure it gets done right.  It takes about 15 minutes to prepare the veggie dog but they insist it will be the best veggie dog you’ve ever tasted.

imageDirt Dog also offers up three different sides: Dirty Fries, Dirty Chips and Dirty Corn.   I had to try the corn.  For $2.95 you get an ear of grilled corn on the cob, covered in crema, Cotija cheese, cilantro, bacon bits and sprinkled with chili powder.  And then there are Dirty Desserts: Deep Fried Twinkies and Deep Fried Oreos!  I can’t wait to try them on my next trip.

If you have stopped counting calories or cancelled your diet altogether, then I can recommend a quick trip to Dirt Dog.  If you are one of those gym rats, than I suggest you jog down Figueroa, have a Dirt Dog and jog back home.  It’s worth the trip!
