CHEF JASON HARLEY’S FRIED CHICKEN IS BACK IN DTLA AT BIRDIES… AND NOW SERVED WITH ARTISANAL DONUTS

I was sad when Chef Jason Harley closed down his Mabel’s Chicken & Waffles restaurant on Olympic Boulevard last year.  His fried chicken was some of the best ever. Well, I’m happy again, because Chef J has reopened the restaurant with a new name and new menu. It’s now called Birdies.  The waffles are out, but donuts are in.  The Birdies concept is described as “fresh, fun, all natural food, served fast.”

imageI ordered the Birdies Original Chicken Sandwich ($9).  The chicken is ABF free range, veggie fed, antibiotic free.  The chicken is battered, fried and then topped with cole slaw, buttermilk ranch mayo, Tillamook cheddar, cured pickles and served on a buttery brioche bun. Delicious! Okay, Birdies chicken sandwich rivals one of my favorites, the chicken sandwich from Ludo Bird inside Staples Center.  Birdies chicken sandwich is just as good and less expensive.

Birdies also specializes in artisanal donuts that are made hourly with King Arthur flour and locally sourced ingredients.  They start at $3 each!  Their signature flavors include Candied Bacon Maple, Lemon Thyme Pistachio and Cinnamon Nut Crunch.

Birdies is open Monday through Thursday 6am to 9pm.  It’s open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday, Sunday Until 5pm.  Go by and get that chicken sandwich or a donut and coffee and be sure to check out the Albert Einstein mural on the western exterior wall of the building.  It was commissioned by street artist Never.
