If you love candy and sweets, you need to head straight to Fugestu-do Sweet Shop on 1st Street in Little Tokyo.  It’s a family owned business that dates back to 1903.  Fugestu-Do sells lots of different kinds of candies, but they specialize in mochi.  Okay, if you don’t know about mochi, it’s a Japanese confection that is made by pounding steamed glutinous rice.  It’s sweet, chewy and delicious.  You’ve seen it before, probably are the toppings bar of your local frozen yogurt shop.

Fugestu-do makes their own mochi by hand in house every day.  It ranges from the more traditional to new fruit flavors.  I’m a huge fan of the chocolate mochi, but I just tried their strawberry mochi surrounding a peanut butter center.  Delicious!  They also have a new blueberry mochi that I am dying to shove in my mouth.

Next time you are in or around Little Tokyo, stop into Fugestu-do Sweet Shop.  It’s open 8am to 6pm on Sunday through Thursday, and until  7pm on Friday and Saturday.
