There’s another new restaurant to tell you about… this on is called Ugo, an Italian cafe on 6th street between Grand and Olive just west of Pershing Square. This new Ugo is a spin off of the original restaurant in Culver City and the Ugo Cafe in Santa Monica. Ugo in Downtown L.A. serves breakfast and lunch… plus some amazing desserts. It’s a quaint space with very friendly counter service and limited seating.
We popped in few days ago for lunch. My husband really wanted a salad but thought that all their salads were pre-made, so he ordered the Caprese panini ($8.99). It was foir de latte mozzarella with roma tomato, basil and olive oil. I ordered the Prosciutto San Danielle panini ($8.99). It was very similar to my husband’s except it had prosciutto on it. We scarfed those things down. Delicious.
Our friend ordered the Chicken Caesar Salad ($8.99). It was grilled chicken breast, romaine hearts, shaved Parmesan cheese and crostini tossed in homemade Caesar dressing. It was NOT pre-made at all. They do have some pre-made salads and sandwiches for people who want to grab and go, but otherwise the all the food is made to order.
You can’t leave the restaurant with dessert, and there are a lot to choose from. I wanted a cannoli, then I wanted the New York cheesecake. They both looked delicous, but Ugo is all about the gelato. We went for a cone of the pistacchio gelato. Amazing! I can’t wait to go back and get some gelato on a stick… and a cannoli… and some cheesecake!
Right now there are a few great European cafe-style restaurants right near 6th and Olive including Madame Monsieur and Pitchoun. The new Ugo is a great additional to the international selection in the neighborhood.
