Have you tasted an Umami Burger yet? What are you waiting for? Umami Burger is a national chain restaurant that has two Downtown Los Angeles locations: One in the Arts District and the other on Broadway at 9th Street. If you are a burger fan, you need to check this place out.
The Broadway location is the home base for the restaurant’s culinary innovation team. Umami Broadway often features the newest menu items before they are available anywhere else. The restaurant has a very industrial feel with it’s reclaimed wood and exposed Edison bulbs. Okay, enough about the restaurant… let’s talk about the food. According to the restaurant’s website, umami is an ingredient-activated taste sensation; it is often referred to as the fifth taste and described with words like savory and meaty.
Our meal started with an order of the sweet potato fries seasoned with their signature sweet salt, followed by some tempura onion rings. These onion rings are thick cut and malt battered (maybe a bit too think).
Then started our parade of burgers. First up… the Greenbird. It’s a ground turkey patty topped with crushed avocado, green cheese, butter lettuce, sprouts and green goddess dressing. Next came the K-BBQ burger. It’s a beef patty covered in gochujang glaze, caramelized kimchi, sesame aioli, Korean ketchup topped with a scallion-cilantro salad.
Next was the Manly burger, topped with house beer-cheddar cheese, bacon lardons, smoked-salt onion strings plus Umami house ketchup and mustard spread. Finally, the Sunny Side burger with parmesan frico, truffle thyme compound butter, truffled arugula, truffled aioli and topped with a fried egg.
In addition to great food, Umami Burger on Broadway also has great service. This is a great place to check out next time you are craving a burger.
