I used to think that Tom’s Urban served the best grilled cheese sandwich in DTLA, but a few weeks ago they changed their menu and changed the bread they use to make their Croatian Fig Jam + three Cheese sandwich. It is no longer served on a toasted butter brioche. The new bread just ruins it. Yuck!
Well, I have found my new favorite grilled cheese sandwich in DTLA. It’s called “The Italian Job.” It is served at The Melt in the Taste Food Hall in the Fig at 7th shopping complex. “The Italian Job” ($5.95) is Fontina and Provolone cheeses melted with grilled mushrooms on housemade garlic bread. You can add charred jalapenos, tomatoes or grilled onions at no additional cost. This sandwich is awesome.
According to the restaurant’s website, they use “real aged cheeses that are melted to perfection on BOTH sides of our fresh baked artisan buns.” All the sandwiches are made to order, so they are all served melted and gooey as any good grilled cheese sandwich should be. The people at The Melt also post the calorie count on the menu. In case you are wondering, “The Italian Job” is 520 calories (and worth it).
