School is officially back in session! We finally checked out the new Public School 213 restaurant. It opened a few weeks ago in the former Daily Grill location in the ground level of the Pegasus building at 6th and Flower. As the name implies, the restaurant has a “school” theme that starts with the composition book menus and loose leaf paper-style bar napkins.
Unlike your school cafeteria, they serve alcohol here. The place has a full bar with a great selection of craft beers on tap. They also serve great food. We started with the Bacon Cheddar Tots ($6) served with sriracha ketchup. These things were scrumptious. I wished there were more of them, but I had to “play nice” and share. We also shared the Mezze Plate ($7) of baba ghanoush, hummus, tapenade, marinated feta and crispy chickpea. The lavish bread that was served with the Mezze Plate was perfect.
We stopped sharing and ordered our main courses. First up was the Beer Battered Fish & Chips ($14). It was three healthy pieces of fried cod and French fries served with rémoulade sauce and more of the sriracha ketchup. The batter on the fish was nice and light, and those fries were delicious.
We also ordered two of their hand-tossed pizzas. The House Pepperoni Pizza ($11) with mozzarella, provolone, tomatoes and jalapeños was exactly what you’d expect. The Frito Pie Pizza ($12) topped with housemade chili, provolone, pickled jalapeños and of course Fritos was great, but you put Fritos on anything and I will eat it.
The service at Public School 213 was excellent. Our server Rossyo was friendly, attentive and helpful. She made some great suggestions. Public School 213 does a great job with the “school” theme. Their happy hour (4-7pm Monday-Friday) is called “Recess” and when you ask for leftover food to-go, they call it “Homework.” Give me homework like that any day!
