Barrel Down is the new “American Beer Hall” on 7th Street across from Bottega Louie. It’s only been open a few months, but it’s getting a lot of buzz. The place has 40 taps of American beer, plus cocktails, wine and what’s described as “bar cuisine.” The bar has one of the longest bars in DTLA. I have been wanting to check this place out since it opened, so I was excited to finally round up some friends for a night of drinking.
As soon as we arrived, the bartender explained that you order at the bar, and that it is open seating. We found great seats at a communal high-top table inside the restaurant looking out toward the outside patio. When we figured out what we wanted to drink, we headed to the bar and placed the order. We ordered the Three Weavers Seafarer beer and two of the signature cocktails. Cheers! The drinks were great!
After a few minutes, we headed back up to the bar and placed a food order. The food was delivered to the table a short time later. First up was the Cauliflower Popcorn: fried battered cauliflower served with ginger aioli and chili lime vinaigrette. We loved it, especially the vinaigrette. Next came the Avocado Grilled Cheese: smoked cheddar and bellwether cheese with sliced avocado and basil. The first few bites were awesome, but the center of this grilled cheese sandwich wasn’t melted. It was still cold. This was a total disappointment.
I liked Barrel Down, but I didn’t love it. I will give the place another chance. Next time we will sit at the bar so we don’t have to get up to order, and so that the bartenders have the opportunity to be more interactive and friendly. Barrel Down is open at 11:30am on weekdays, and 4pm on weekends. It stays open late all week. Happy Hour is 4-7pm weekdays.
