The people at L.A. Live have come up with a way to drum up business on the nights when there are no events at Staples Center or the Nokia Theater. They call them “Dark Nights” and bring in live musicians, performers, artists and indie craft vendors and unbeatable $5 food & drink specials at participating L.A. Live restaurants! Friday, May 15th was a “Dark Night” at L.A. Live and we had a miserable experience at Katsuya, but we also had a great experience at Tom’s Urban. Tom’s Urban was packed, but the hostess sat us right away. As she led us to our table she told us to ask our server about the special “Dark Nights” menu. The special menu offered up seven different food items for $5. Our server was David. He was so friendly and appeared to be enjoying himself. We ordered the Corned Beef Eggrolls and two orders of the Croation Fig Jam and Grilled Cheese sandwiches off the “Dark Nights” menu. We also ordered the Butter Poached Lobster & Shrimp Tacos ($14) off the main menu, as well as the Urban Mule ($14) and a beer.
The Corned Beef Eggrolls were corned beef, hash potatoes, Asadero cheese and green onions deep fried in an eggroll tortilla. I just didn’t really get the combo of corned beef and eggrolls. The Croation Fig Jam and Three Cheese Small Bites Sandwiches are perfection. It’s Fontana, Brie and Harvarti cheese on a buttered brioche. We always order two servings because these mini sandwiches are so good neither my husband or I want to share. The Butter Poached Lobster & Shrimp Tacos are served in threes, with shredded cabbage, pico, chipotle aioli and cilantro crema. Delicious!
The Urban Mule is on tap. It is vodka, fresh lime juice, pressed ginger and simple syrup topped with club soda and served in a metal mug. These things are so good… one of my favorite cocktails in DTLA.
Next time L.A. Live hosts a “Dark Nights” head straight to Tom’s Urban, and if you are lucky David will be working! You won’t be disappointed.
