TOM’S URBAN IN L.A. LIVE HAS THE BEST GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH IN DTLA

tom3Really, how can one little grilled cheese sandwich be so good?  The people at Tom’s Urban in L.A. Live have created the best grilled cheese ever.  This is not your basic melted American cheese between two slices of bread.  This thing has a secret ingredient (well, not really secret, it’s listed on the menu, but play along here) in it… fig jam!  It’s officially called the Grilled Croatian Fig Jam + 3 Cheese ($5.50).  It’s a combo of Fontina, brie and Havarti cheeses melted on a butter-toasted brioche… and don’t forget this magic fig jam.  The only downfall is it’s small, and if you ask me, it’s too small to share.  Order your own!tom7

Tom’s Urban has some great food.  It’s a lot of small plates so you can try a lot of different dishes without ordering too much food.  Another hit on the menu is the Truffled Cracked Lobster Sliders ($18).  You get two sliders stuffed with Maine lobster with truffled mayo and wild arugula on butter-toasted brioche.

I also like the Buffalo Chicken Sliders ($10).  It’s white-meat crispy chicken with Tom’s Buffalo sauce, bleu cheese Greek yogurt dressing, crisp celery on that butter-toasted brioche.  Wow, maybe it’s this butter-toasted brioche bun that I like so much.

We also enjoy the White Bean Hummus ($6), but there is never enough of the rosemary flat bread.  We always have to ask for more.

For a while, I was obsessed with their Sriracha Pot Stickers, but for some reason they took them off the menu and replaced them with the Ginger Chicken Pot Stickers with Seoul dipping sauce ($7.25).  They are good, but not as good as the Sriracha ones.

Tom’s also serves up some interesting tacos, like the Truffles Portobello + Fires Roasted Poblano ($13.50) topped with queso fresco, truffle oil and fresh lime.  The mushroom tacos are alright, but we really like the Butter Poached Lobster + Shrimp Tacos ($18) served with cabbage, pico, chipotle aioli and cilantro crema.

Tom’s Urban is a great place to eat… and drink.  They have a full bar with some creative cocktails including their Moonshine Mary and their Darker & Stormier made with Kraken Black spiced rum and Tom’s house made ginger brew.  On game nights at Staples Center and during big televised sports events, this place gets packed, and a little crazy.  Sometimes the service is spotty, but the food never disappoints.  You should check it out, but don’t forget to order the grilled cheese with fig jam!
